We would like to introduce the Community Bank Blackburn South who are kindly supporting our Annual Vultures awards through their community grants program.
We’re currently seeking nominations from the Vultures community: https://forms.gle/SPwpC9SdBVbW4Ems6
The Vultures awards recognise our Vultures community over 5 categories:
- Jack Nicey ‘Spirit of Vultures’ Award
As you would expect, a growing club like the Vermont Vultures, takes a lot of time and effort by a lot of dedicated people, often taking away from their personal time.
The Jack Nicey ‘Spirit of Vultures’ Award is a community award given from time to time to a member of the club who has provided exceptional service above and beyond that expected of anyone in any particular role, be that coach, team manager, parent, player, committee member etc.
- Jason Smith Junior Male Player of the Year
The Jason Smith Junior player of the year award is named after Former Australian Boomer captain (and Vulture) Jason Smith. Jason attended Vermont Secondary College and played his junior career for the Vermont Vultures Basketball Club in the GEBC competition. Jason is a 3-time NBL champion (1996, 2004, and 2005), and NBL Grand Final MVP (2005), 2 times All NBL First Team (2001 and 2005), Best NBL sixth man (1998) and also won a Gold Medal with Australia at the Commonwealth Games in 2006. Jason also Captained the Australian Boomers at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.
The Jason Smith Junior Male Player of the Year award seeks to recognise Vultures who are most likely to succeed in basketball and go onto play at the elite level. The award is given to those who have achieved outstanding results in all aspects of basketball (Representative and/or state) over the
prior 12 months.
- Carly Wilson Junior Female Player of the Year
The Carly Wilson Junior player of the year award is named after Former Australian basketball player (and Vulture) Carly Wilson. Carly was born in Vermont and played her junior career for the Vermont Eagles Basketball Club in the GEBC competition, prior to their merger with the Vermont Vultures in 2002. Carly is a 2-time WNBL champion (2003/04, 204/05) and was selected in the WNBL All Star Five (2002/03). Carly first represented Australia at a junior level, competing in the 2001 FIBA Oceania U19 Women’s Championship and was a member of the 2002 U21 national team that won gold at the FIBA Oceania U21 Women’s Championships. She was a gold Medallist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and again at the 2009 FIBA Oceania Women’s Championship.
